WATCH | Queer Revolution Contract Signing

Never in history have LGBTIQ+ people across the world enjoyed the rights and recognition

we have today. At the same time our rights - where these are recognised in law - continue

to be violated by families, communities, governments, business, political parties, and

religious and traditional bodies. Working-class queer people remain the most vulnerable

to homophobic and transphobic hate crimes and exclusion.

Recognising the historical struggles and current challenges faced by the LGBTIQ+ community worldwide, Zackie Achmat, an openly queer activist for over 47 years, and the Queer Revolution Activist Forum have signed a Contract of Work that ensures their commitment to uphold the rights and advance the interests of all individuals irrespective of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. We have a duty to address the systemic discrimination and violence faced by queer individuals, particularly those from working-class backgrounds.

"We are activists who are queer, not queer activists, and we will be a bedrock in all struggles of the working class," - Zackie Achmat

Zackie, together with Queer Revolution, have drafted a Programme of Work and Action that details their responsibilities now, and for when Zackie is in Parliament, some of which include:

  • Protecting the rights of LGBTIQ+ people that are enshrined in the Constitution

  • by facilitating legal, social and political education that ensures that we know how to enforce them.

  • Combating systemic violations and violence that targets working class LGBTIQ+ people

  • by establishing Queer Support and Safety Groups at various levels to ensure the safety and well-being of LGBTIQ+ individuals.

  • Campaigning for health and social services to advocate for improved access to primary health care, with a focus on mental health and substance use disorder.
